WHO: Rapid spread can be stopped

Date:

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the rapid spread of monkey pox can be stopped. This is possible with the right strategies in the right groups, said Rosamund Lewis, who is responsible for fighting the disease at WHO.

The WHO is still convinced of this at the moment. “But time flies and we all have to work together to make it happen,” Lewis warned on Tuesday.

Global health emergency declared
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Saturday declared a global health emergency, the WHO’s highest alert level. Until now, the United Nations (UN) organization had only classified the coronavirus pandemic and polio as international health emergencies.

More than 16,000 cases in more than 75 countries
Monkeypox is a viral infection that is usually mild. Symptoms include fever, headache, and rash, which usually start on the face and spread to the rest of the body. Since the beginning of May, the disease has spread worldwide. In the current year, more than 16,000 cases have been reported from more than 75 countries.

In the past, the disease mainly occurred in West and Central Africa and rarely elsewhere. Recently, however, monkeypox has also been reported more and more from Europe. So far (as of July 22), Austria has registered 99 cases of monkey pox.
