The Spanish government’s minister for the ecological transition and demographic challenge also assures that fracking on Alava soils is not an “immediate or viable medium- and long-term solution”.
The third vice president and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the demographic challenge of the Spanish government, Teresa Ribera, has emphasized that around solar energy there is “a variable, the socio-economic one that needs to be strengthened”, i.e. neighbors and municipalities that they install windmills “advantage” somehow of that energy. “It must have a return,” he insisted, something which, in his words, “hasn’t been worked on until now.”
Ribera has been interviewed in the program “Boulevard” of Radio Euskadi, a few now for her participation in the congress ‘Windeurope Annual Event 2022’which will be held this Tuesday at the BEC in Barakaldo (Bizkaia).
Asked about the possibility to resume the debate on: obtaining gas from the underground of Álava through franckinghas assured the minister that she is not “particularly optimistic” in this regard, as it has become clear that it is not “an immediate or viable medium and long term solution”.
Ribera has recognized the “great dependence” that some European countries have on the gas in Russian (ranging from 60 to 90%) and the difficulty the EU has to do without. However, he has admitted that it is “very complicated” to explain to public opinion and Ukrainian society that fuels are still imported from Russia “which help finance the invasion
The minister referred to the images emanating from Bucha, Ukraine, which she described as “horrifying and horrifying”, stating that they are “inducing moral tension” as the purchase of Russian gas “keeps the invasion economically alive”. That is why he believes that Europe should continue to provide “a united response” as soon as possible in search of alternatives.
Finally, he indicated that he expects a “positive response” from the European Commission to the proposal to limit the price of gas to 30 euros per megawatt (MWh) hour, although he admitted that it is a “complex measure, which to strengthen technically so that it has the least impact”.
