Gazprom supplies all the gas it can to Central Europeas explained Dmitry Peskovy, spokesman for the Russian presidency. The Russian gas company has cut its pumping of gas to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, the largest from Russia to the rest of Europe, to 20% due to the lack of equipment for its maintenance, as explained by the Kremlin.

“Gazprom, the supplier, is providing what is needed and what is possible,” Peskov told a news conference, but currently “there are fewer technical options for pumping” due to restrictions and sanctions imposed by the European Union.

The gas pipeline has been crippled for maintenance, and despite initial EU fears, it has been put back into service after repairs were completed. However, Peskov explains that “these sanctions prevented technical maintenance from being carried outreplace parts, perform general repairs and other legal work on the equipment required for pumping”, and “as this work is completed, Gazprom will have the opportunity to expand pumping”.

“Gazprom was and is a reliable guarantor for the fulfillment of its obligationsbut cannot guarantee delivery if imported equipment cannot receive technical maintenance due to European sanctions,” the spokesperson said.

Russia argues that sanctions imposed by the European Union and its Western partners make repair work, including transporting equipment from elsewhere, such as Canada, difficult and that it is blocked by sanctions. Both the Social Democratic Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholzlike your Minister of Economy and Climate Protection, the green Robert Habeckkeep that up no technical obstacles for a regular flow of Russian gas through the Nord Stream.

In February, days before Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, Germany halted commissioning of Nord Stream 2, the pipeline intended to expand the flow of gas from Russia to Germany, almost completely built.
