Mikl-Leitner in conversation: – Rethink CO2 pricing, no to state tax

Date:

The governor of Lower Austria, Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) now demands “full concentration of politicians at Krone LIVE with Jana Pasching to help the population get through the crisis”. The CO2 pricing planned for October should be reconsidered and postponed, the federal government’s considerations for an electricity price cap are important. However, the state governor does not want to talk about an inheritance tax and wealth tax as counter-financing for inflation. Here he indicates a clear rejection. Austria is a country with high taxes, “there will be no extra tax”.

To help people, “concrete measures are now important, even if you have to go into debt”. A major aid package has been launched in Lower Austria: in addition to a discount on the electricity price, there is also more money for commuting. Is that contrary to the climate goals, since we will drive less cars in the future? According to Mikl-Leitner, the top priority is still on public transport, where there is more investment. The expansion of bicycle paths is also being pushed. But for short distances you do need a car in Lower Austria: “You can’t play one against the other.” Just put that off.”

Mikl-Leitner: ‘I am not surprised by loss of confidence in politics’
Johanna Mikl-Leitner is unimpressed by the ÖVP’s poor poll numbers. “Anyone who looks at short-term studies week after week cannot focus on long-term work.” The loss of faith in politics worries her much more, but doesn’t surprise her either. “If you look at the debates in parliament, it’s no wonder you lose confidence. In these times people expect to stand together and work together.” The ‘accusations’ of the WKStA or the Court of Auditors must first be checked before turning to fierce criticism.

Short vacation planned with daughters
Unlike Chancellor Karl Nehammer, who canceled his family vacation due to the current energy crisis, Mikl-Leitner takes time for a short summer vacation with her daughters. To, as she herself says, “give them strength with a holiday in times of crisis”.
