Accident at Lake Wörthersee – does a helicopter have to leave to salvage boats?

Date:

A major German businessman (64) was seriously injured in a motorboat accident on Lake Wörthersee. The salvage of the stranded luxury boat is difficult. Should there even be a helicopter approaching?

After a drunken evening, a nighttime motorboat trip on Lake Wörthersee for a German group ended with an accident on Snake Island. The captain (64), a well-known German entrepreneur, suffered serious head injuries. Everyone else was unharmed.

The police have now launched an investigation. The 64-year-old was not only drunk, but also allegedly speeding. The unfortunate boat is a luxury vehicle of the Riva brand, costs about 360,000 euros and has two engines of 370 hp each. The top speed is 36 knots (66 km/h).

Need helicopter rescue boat?
In any case, salvaging the boat is anything but easy, as Paul Schmalzl of the traditional yard of the same name confirms: “Since the boat weighs 6.5 tons and the propellers are stuck in the mud, there are only two options. It has to be either lifted by a cargo helicopter or pulled over the bow by another boat.’ Until a decision is made, the stranded luxury vehicle must remain on Snake Island.
