How satisfied are people who deliver food with their jobs? A study looked at this. The result: every second woman is already offended. There are also problems in the area of employment.
Especially during the pandemic, the food deliverers on bicycles have saved one or the other from a growling stomach. The couriers with their light backpacks are also an integral part of the cityscape. There are 1,500 deliverers in Vienna alone and 4,500 throughout Austria.
Own mobile phone on duty
300 of them took part in a study organized by trade unions and the Chamber of Labor. And the results are not just something to celebrate: although the collective labor agreement for bicycle couriers was negotiated in 2020, many of them are still on the road as freelancers. Many even have to pay for the mobile phone and the bill themselves, which is essential for doing their job.
Especially difficult for women
80 percent of the so-called riders are men, the average age is 30 years. Only a third of them are studying, for the majority the job is the main source of income. Most deliverers come from Austria, Germany and Hungary. But Syrians, Afghans and Turks are also represented. The work is especially difficult for the few women involved. According to the survey, 60 percent have already been offended and 35 percent have been confronted with advances.
Also worrying: the majority of riders are not aware that there is a collective labor agreement. And few have heard of works councils.
