At the end of the general audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis remembered the victims of the floods in Europe: “I pray especially for those who have lost their lives and for their families. I thank and encourage local Catholic communities and other volunteer organizations for the help they are providing.”
“In recent days, heavy rains have hit Central and Eastern Europe, causing casualties, missing people and enormous damage,” the Pope said.
“Austria, Romania, the Czech Republic and Poland in particular are struggling with the tragic inconveniences caused by the floods. I assure everyone of my closeness,” he concluded to the audience.
Francis returns to Rome after his trip to Southeast Asia
On Friday, the pope ended his 12-day trip to Asia and landed back in Rome. Francis, 87, had visited Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore since Sept. 2.
However, he also defied doubts about his health. In recent years, the pope had to undergo surgery for, among other things, a tissue rupture in his abdominal wall. Due to his knee pain and recurring sciatica, he has been using a wheelchair frequently for two years.
