Live Ammunition – China Announces Military Maneuvers in Taiwan Strait

Date:

China has announced military maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait for Saturday, which will also involve the use of live ammunition. Live ammunition will be fired during the maneuver in the strait between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., according to a Beijing government statement released Friday by state media. During this time, entering the water is prohibited.

Tensions between China and the United States over the Taiwan issue have steadily increased in recent months. In a telephone conversation with US President Joe Biden on Thursday, Chinese leader Xi Jinping said: “Whoever plays with fire will eventually burn. I hope the American side understands that.”

American visit as a provocation?
The reason for the latest escalation is a possible visit to Taiwan by high-ranking US politician Nancy Pelosi: As Speaker of the House of Representatives, Democrat Pelosi holds the third-highest office in the US and will likely travel to Taiwan with an army flat. Beijing considers such a visit, which has not yet been confirmed by Washington, as a provocation.

China sees Taiwan as a breakaway province that must be reunited with the mainland – if necessary by military force. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine has recently fueled fears that Beijing could use a similar approach when dealing with Taiwan.
