Energy Crisis in Cuba – Electricity Grid Before Collapse: No Carnival in Havana!

Date:

Against the background of the energy crisis in Cuba, the carnival in Havana has now been cancelled. In addition, the electricity in the capital will be temporarily switched off in August, state media reported on Saturday.

So far, Havana has been spared the regular power outages that have been in effect for months on the rest of the island. Carnival has been held in the Caribbean island state of Cuba in the summer since the 1960s, in Havana the last two weekends of August.

“Now is the time to show solidarity and help the rest of Cuba suffer less from the unwanted power outages,” Luis Antonio Torres, leader of the Communist Party of Havana, told the Tribuna newspaper.

Expert: Electricity grid is about to collapse
However, University of Texas energy expert Jorge Pinon told Reuters news agency that the entire electrical grid was on the brink of collapse after fires at two of the 20 already obsolete power plants. If the factories were not maintained as planned, they would “enter a downward spiral for which there is no short-term solution”.
