On the occasion of Naval Forces Day, Russian President Vladimir Putin adopted a new naval doctrine in St. Petersburg on Sunday. Russia’s maritime borders, including those in the Arctic and the Black Sea, were also defined there. “We will provide protection hard and by all means,” the Kremlin chief stressed during a warship parade.
At the same time, Putin announced that the new hypersonic naval missile Zirkon would soon be commissioned. Delivery of the missiles will begin in the coming months, with the frigate Admiral Gorshkov being the first to be equipped.
Military infrastructure in Crimea is being expanded
The new doctrine stated that the US quest for dominance of the world’s oceans was a “challenge to Russia’s national security”. The document, which Putin ceremonially signed, also stipulates that military infrastructure in Crimea’s annexed Black Sea peninsula will be expanded. According to the doctrine, the construction of modern aircraft carriers is also planned.
While performing in front of thousands of spectators, Putin did not speak directly about the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. He thanked the Navy for its missions, which it has carried out for centuries, and praised its high degree of defense readiness. Russia has also deployed numerous warships in the Black Sea in attacks on Ukraine.
Drone attack on the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet
According to Russian reports, the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet has been attacked with a drone in the city of Sevastopol on the Crimean peninsula claimed by Ukraine. Five people were injured on Sunday, the governor of Sevastopol said in his blog on the news channel Telegram. Ukrainian authorities denied the attack.
