The deaths of more than 50 Ukrainian POWs in the Russian-controlled Olenivka detention camp outside Donetsk have also sparked outrage and outrage among the Ukrainian diaspora in Austria. On this occasion, hundreds of Ukrainians demonstrated on Sunday evening at Heldenplatz in Vienna.
“This act of terror will never be forgotten. They killed our soldiers in that concentration camp,” explains a co-organizer. Like all active participants in the demonstrations, he blamed Russia for the deaths of his compatriots. The version circulated throughout Moscow that the Ukrainian army could have killed the POWs themselves with aimed fire was not mentioned at all on Sunday evening.
In speeches and on banners, protesters in Heroes’ Square called for Russia’s official declaration of a “state of terror”. At the same time, they left little doubt that after the massacre in the Kiev suburb of Bucha, Olenivka is yet another pivotal episode in Russia’s current war against Ukraine, which has been going on for 158 days.
Accusations also against the West
“Men and women who gave everything to defend Mariupol have been wiped out in this prison. We are angry that we have not done enough to protect them,” said Andriy Karioti, one of the organizers of the demonstration. In his speech, he had previously criticized Ukraine’s international partners: all this could have happened because none of the politician from Austria and the European Union had done something to save these defenders of Mariupol, who had been held captive for 90 days, the activist said.
