Russia’s Supreme Court has classified Ukraine’s Azov regiment as a “terrorist organization”. Azov’s paramilitary units would be classified as a “terrorist organization” and their activities would be banned in Russia, a judge told Russia’s Tass news agency on Tuesday. For the members of the Azov regiment imprisoned by Russia, the decision could mean a very severe punishment.
Russian leaders continue to point to the Azov regiment to back up their claims that they are fighting neo-Nazis in Ukraine. There, the Azov regiment is one of the most prominent military formations fighting against Russian forces in eastern Ukraine.
Members of the Azov regiment have long held out at the Azov steel mill in the southern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol. After weeks of siege, the fighters surrendered to Russian superiority and were captured.
