As if the current tensions between China and the United States weren’t enough, Russia is now joining the debate. Moscow spoke of a “highly provocative note” about the expected visit of top American politician Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, thus expressing solidarity with China.
“Everything related to this tour and the possible visit to Taiwan naturally has a very provocative note,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in Moscow on Tuesday, according to the Interfax agency.
China increased threats
According to information from the parliament in Taipei, the speaker of the US House of Representatives was expected in the island republic on Tuesday evening (local time). It would be the United States’ highest visit in a quarter of a century to democratic Taiwan, which Beijing leaders see only as part of the People’s Republic of China.
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army increased the threat with maneuvers, target practice, military aircraft and warships near Taiwan and the closure of sea areas. In response, the Taiwanese military has stepped up its operational readiness. Russia, on the other hand, has close ties with China, which became especially important against the background of the war in Ukraine, as Moscow has largely isolated itself internationally as a result.
Sign against threats from Beijing
Democrat Pelosi has long planned to visit free Taiwan to take a stand against threats from Beijing. However, Biden had also reacted cautiously to the reported visitation plans, saying the US military didn’t think it was a good idea at this point. Tensions around Taiwan have not been this high since the 1990s.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had recently raised fears that China might take the island democratic republic by force in a similar manner. Chinese leader Xi considers it his mission to achieve “unification” and threatens military conquest.
