Too much traffic – automatic border barrier against Hungarian commuters

Date:

Schattendorf has had enough of the traffic due to the many Hungarian commuters and wants to install an automatic barrier.

People have had enough of traffic through the nearby border crossing in Schattendorf. The route is often used by Hungarian commuters as an alternative route if they want to save the journey via Klingenbach. As early as 2015, car traffic at the border crossing was severely restricted. Since then, there has been a driving ban on weekday mornings and evenings. But despite the restriction, there is a lot of traffic, Mayor Thomas Hoffmann says. Many commuters would now drive in the late morning or at night.

Danger to children and the elderly
The heavy traffic does not only disturb the local chief because the outdoor pool, cemetery and kindergarten are nearby and accidents can happen. New projects are also planned in the area. In the autumn, among other things, the government care base and a new senior citizen’s home with more than two dozen apartments will be built.

According to Hoffmann, a busy road poses a major risk for the elderly. He therefore wants to close the border crossing for the most part.

Only access with the correct license plate
“The idea I want to implement is a barrier system that only allows cars from Schattendorf and the neighboring Hungarian municipality of Ágfalva and agricultural vehicles to pass,” explains Hoffmann. Pedestrians and cyclists should still be able to pass. The system is already in use in Tyrol. If you want to use the border crossing, you must register the vehicle registration number in advance with the municipality.

The license plate is then read at the border and the barrier opens. Hoffmann now wants to talk to the municipality of Ágfalva. He wants it to be implemented as soon as possible: “Better today than tomorrow.”
