Close to regulation – German gas storage tanks are 70 percent full

Date:

Due to the reduced supply volumes from Russia, there are gas shortages in entire parts of Europe. Germany is actively tackling this shortage and is expanding its gas storage capacity to around 70 percent.

While Austria only has about 50 percent full gas storage facilities, Germany already has two-thirds – and the trend is upward. The gas storages are growing by about 0.4 percent per day. The value is thus approaching the target set by the new EU regulation.

75 percent by September 1
According to the federal government, the German gas storage facilities should be 75 percent full by September 1. On October 1, the percentage should rise to 85 percent, by November 1, it should already be 95 percent. This number has already been reached at many gas storage facilities in Germany. According to Klaus Müller, head of the German Federal Network Agency, three quarters of all storage facilities in Germany are more than 80 percent full and in many parts even more than 85 percent.

A few storage facilities previously operated by Russia are below the 70 percent average. After Russia cut gas supply from the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to 20 percent in late July, as reported here, certain storage facilities are now filled with significantly less gas. These are located in Rehden in Lower Saxony or in Wolfsberg in Bavaria.
