Due to a landslide on the Matterhorn, 13 climbers who had been on the Italian normal route at 3715 meters were brought to safety on Tuesday evening. The rescue of the foreign mountaineers took place by helicopter shortly before 9 p.m., the Valle d’Aosta alpine rescue reported.
Two climbers who were under the landslide at the time of the collapse said they saw no other climbers behind them. This was also confirmed by the climbers who were above the collapse site.
Geologists examine the condition of the mountain
The affected route is slated to remain closed on Wednesday so geologists can assess the mountain’s condition. Mountain guides had already stopped climbing there on July 20 because there was a risk of collapse due to the drought. Some mountaineers would have tried to climb the Matterhorn anyway.
Eleven people died on July 3 when a glacier broke off on Marmolada in Trentino. Last week, the mayor of the municipality of Canazei ordered an extension of the so-called red zone, which is no longer accessible. The reason for this is the possible instability of a rock niche and the widening of several fissures, the statement said.
