In the fight against food waste, British supermarket chain Waitrose is canceling the best-before date of about 500 products. This is intended to encourage customers to purchase food that has expired but is still edible.
Specifically, from September the “best before” notice will disappear, especially on packaged fresh fruit and vegetables, herbs and other plants. The company wants to encourage more customers to eat foods that have passed their expiration date but are still good. The best before date determines how long the manufacturer can guarantee that a food has all its specific properties. The condition is that the product has also been stored correctly.
expiration date remains
It is different with the best-before date, from when consumption is already associated with health risks: According to Waitrose, these data remain. The background to the measure is that food waste is still “a major problem” in Britain. British households throw away 4.5 million tons of edible food every year. In Austria there are estimates of more than a billion tons of food. A third of the food produced worldwide would end up in the garbage.
Waitrose, founded in 1904, today has more than 330 stores and approximately 52,590 employees. The chain is owned by John Lewis Partnership.
