New details about the terrible train accident early Wednesday in St. Johann in Tirol (Kitzbüheler district): The boy who died in the collision between a regional express and a car was only four years old. The father (35) was still desperately trying to save his child from the car that was locked between the level crossing barriers. He himself was hit and seriously injured.
The drama happened shortly after 5 p.m. at the so-called Egger crossing. Presumably because of a traffic jam, a 35-year-old driver from Saudi Arabia had to stop immediately at the level crossing. Also on board: his wife (34) and their children aged 4, 7 and 11. Suddenly the barriers closed – a nightmare!
Witnesses screamed in despair
Several eyewitnesses saw the dangerous incident and started screaming loudly. “The warning calls allowed the mother and the two older children to get out of the car in time and get to safety,” the police said.
And then the unbelievable happened: the train got closer and couldn’t brake in time. “The father and his four-year-old son were also outside the car, but were hit with full force by the regional express,” the detectives continued.
“When we arrived at the accident site, the vehicle was empty. The child and the man were near the wrecked car. The woman and two children were 10 to 15 meters away,” said operations manager Joachim Jochum. against the “Krone”. “The child had no chance of survival.” It suffered serious head injuries and died at the accident site. After first aid in the St. Johann hospital, the seriously injured father was transferred to the Innsbruck clinic.
Regional train was evacuated
According to ÖBB, there were about 60 passengers on the regional train, all of whom were unharmed, and the train was evacuated. The occupants were then “transported by bus,” said ÖBB spokesman Christoph Gasser-Mair. The railway was closed for three hours. In addition to several police patrols, the St. Johann fire brigade with 40 members, 15 rescue workers, an A&E team, the crew of three A&E helicopters and the crisis intervention team were present.
Further investigation into the exact course of the accident is still in progress.
