Heavy rainfall has caused flooding in northeast Japan. The National Weather Agency has issued the highest warning level for the hard-hit prefectures of Yamagata and Niigata. Streets, cars and houses were flooded in some places.
The extent of the damage is yet to be seen, it said Thursday. Local authorities warned of the danger of landslides due to the massive rainfall.
Tens of thousands of residents were called to safety. Drinking water supplies were interrupted in some cities. Muddy water flooded entire streets and penetrated residential buildings. Regional train traffic was also affected by the water masses.
Global warming causes problems
As a result of global warming, Japan is increasingly experiencing heavy rainfall. As a result, landslides are becoming more frequent in the very mountainous archipelago.
