In the night from Friday to Friday, the fire brigade successfully fought the wildfires in the vicinity of the square. “These fires have been almost extinguished since this morning,” said firefighters spokesman Thomas Kirstein. On the ground there are only a few embers and smaller fires. All in all, it should have burned on an area of about 42 hectares.
Blast location in the middle of the work
The focus of the work on Friday is now at the explosion site, where, according to the police, about 25 tons of explosives (including fireworks, ammunition from the First World War) must be stored. Due to the explosion hazard, emergency services have already drawn a limited circle with a radius of 1000 meters around it. “We have to expect that explosions and debris will continue to fly,” said the fire service.
The police demolition agent has to approach the site of the explosion in an armored vehicle of the Bundeswehr in the morning and thus get a first impression and assess the situation. This plan is not new, but was started on Thursday and canceled again.
Fire tanks and robots
The fire brigade uses armored recovery vehicles from the Bundeswehr and has applied for a fire-extinguishing vehicle from a private company, which is used in potentially explosive areas. In addition, three robots from Lower Saxony drive to the site of the explosion and help with the extinguishing work. Their first mission had to be canceled Thursday night because there were explosions at the site. For hours extinguishing work was unthinkable.
According to the newspaper “Bild”, the emergency services also asked if they could get a fire fighting helicopter from the Bundeswehr. However, this was rejected. The reason: Due to the forest fire in Saxony, there is currently none available. 150 firefighters are currently involved in the extinguishing work. The freshening of the wind on Friday morning was unfavorable because there was a risk that the fire would flare up again.
