Lost Banksy found in Tel Aviv

Date:

A long-lost artwork by British street artist Banksy has now surfaced in a Tel Aviv gallery. The criticism of Israel appeared in 2007 at the Israeli separation wall in occupied Bethlehem. The work is a protest against the decades-long Israeli occupation of areas that the Palestinians claim for a future state.

Palestinian residents had cut the 410-pound concrete slab out of the wall. The graffiti that was thought to have been lost has now resurfaced and has been on display at a gallery in the city of Tel Aviv since Thursday.

Banksy’s art has repeatedly drawn attention to the victims of the conflict in the Middle East. In 2005 and 2007, for example, the street artist sprayed various graffiti on the meter-high border wall that separates Israel from the Palestinian territories. Including the famous rat (pictured above) holding a slingshot in its front paws.

Identity is still top secret
There has been a huge hype surrounding Banksy as he kept his identity a secret for years. Works dedicated to him appear again and again. In March 2021, a Banksy photo was auctioned for a whopping £16.75 million (19.4 million euros at the time). The proceeds went to the British health service.

Social critical art, controversial motifs
Banksy’s identity remains a mystery. All that is known is that he is from Bristol and came to London in the late 1990s. He made a name for himself with his socially critical and often controversial motives. His art repeatedly criticizes war, fascism and excessive consumerism.
