First Balance Sheet 2022 – the army contains more than 13.5 tons of war material

Date:

In the first half of 2022, federal army personnel were called up for more than 515 operations to recover old war material – more than 13.5 tons of material were seized.

In Austria, the army is deployed two to three times a day to recover materials from the First and Second World War. In total, 13.5 tons of material has been secured in the current year, since 2013, the pool is more than 300 tons from more than 10,000 operations. After the advance, the army explores, salvages, transports and destroys the remnants of the war. The remains are largely destroyed at the military detonation sites in Großmittel (Lower Austria) or Allentsteig (Lower Austria). Several hundred pounds of the relics are blown up together. In extremely difficult situations, the mine clearance service destroys the materials on site.

be careful
Proper handling is essential when finding old war material such as ammunition. In any case, it is best not to touch what you find under any circumstances. Anyone discovering war material should immediately contact the nearest police station and keep their distance. As Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) explains: “Especially during the holidays, when there are more hikers out in the Austrian mountains or when people enjoy nature, the chances of finding a war relic from the First or Second World War even higher.” .

Most salvages in Lower Austria
With 253 of the more than 515 salvages, most relics were found in Lower Austria. In Styria 62 times had to be used, in Salzburg 58 times. There were 42 missions in Burgendland, 39 in Vienna. Carinthia and Tyrol follow with 32 and 14 mitigations. At the bottom are Salzburg with eleven and Vorarlberg with four finds.
