Registering refugees costs the police a lot of time. In Burgenland, which is particularly hard hit, the extra effort can no longer be made on its own because the officials at the border are completely overwhelmed. The Ministry of the Interior now has informative figures for this year. According to this data, 8,429 applicants have already been transferred to the federal states for processing.
As reported, the Tyrolean police took over and processed a total of 40 asylum seekers from their Burgenland colleagues last weekend – under the BMI’s overflow scheme. Harald Baumgartner, head of the Tyrolean immigration police, has now confirmed this.
“These were 22 Afghan, nine Tunisian and nine Indian nationals. Before the processing under the Asylum Act and until the decision of the Federal Office for Aliens and Asylum (BFA) on how to proceed, these foreigners were temporarily housed in accommodation in Plon, in the Immigration Police of Innsbruck and also in the police detention center from Innsbruck,” says Baumgartner.
“Country only responsible after admission to the procedure”
These people “were in the process of arrest” and were cared for and cared for to specifications. All listed accommodations meet the requirements for short stopovers – up to 48 hours.
Baumgartner can plausibly explain why these refugees were not accommodated in suitable houses of Tiroler Soziale Diensten GmbH: “The decision on housing is the responsibility of the BFA and then of the Federal Agency for Care and Support Services. Only after admission to the asylum procedure is the federal state of Tyrol responsible for any accommodation.”
After the police registration, the competent authority, the BFA, decided to take further measures. Currently, none of these people are stuck in Tyrol.
8429 applicants transferred to federal states
The Interior Ministry releases more revealing numbers. “Of a total of 24,501 applicants in 2022, 8,429 were transferred to other states for processing. That is about a third of all applicants. The acquisition for registration and the first survey by other federal states looked like this – period up to and including 22 July 2022.
‘Taking over does not mean permanent housing’
The reason for the higher numbers in some states is on the one hand geographical proximity – “shorter distances, thus protecting those affected as much as possible” – but also the existing infrastructure and the resulting capacities.
The ministry also points out that “a takeover under this scheme does not mean that the detainees will also be placed in the relevant state”.
