Put a shilling in the slot, turn the handle once in a circle and a small, sweet ball docks on the gum machine’s dispensing valve. Childhood memories are still alive decades later. At a time when vending machine owner Georg Schwarz didn’t have to deal with vandalism, advertisements and police reports.
Times have changed. While the colorful sticky note used to bring a smile to customers’ faces, today it is often seen as an opportunity for vandalism and theft. “Since September last year, we have reported 96 cases to the police in Vienna alone,” says Schwarz, who supplies machines to about 10,000 customers in Austria and operates more than 20,000 machines.
