Wild chase in Deutschkreutz (Burgenland): Agents on patrol discovered a car illegally crossing the border in the early morning hours. The suspected smuggler at the wheel drove towards Nikitsch, followed by the police. The fleeing driver lost control of the vehicle and ended up on the field. Two of the seven Afghans, some of whom were hidden in the trunk, were injured.
Former Defense Minister Norbert Darabos of the Croatian Minihof was awakened at 4:10 a.m. today when fire service sirens blared in the neighboring town of Nikitsch. “I was immediately concerned that a house was on fire and ran outside to check.”
Concerned ex-minister
“When there was no light, I thought it was an accident,” says the former minister. The fire brigade even had to go to a salvage company. A smuggler who illegally crossed the border in Deutschkreutz fled from a police patrol.
The suspect raced at breakneck speed past the officers who wanted to stop the car. The Serb had seven migrants from Afghanistan in the car, two of whom were in the trunk for the entire journey. During the chase, the tractor skidded and landed on the field. The migrants trapped in the trunk suffered minor injuries. They were treated at Eisenstadt hospital, but were able to leave it again.
Two smugglers in custody
The handcuffs clicked for the suspected smuggler. This morning, another Serb was arrested in Deutschkreutz. He would have illegally transported six Afghans to Austria.
