Death penalty threatens – Russians build human cages for show trials

Date:

The ousted mayor of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, which was taken by Russian troops, has published harrowing images on Telegram. The occupiers have to build huge cages in the philharmonic hall of the city that has been fought over for months. The horrific suspicion: Prisoners of war are locked up there during show trials. These prisoners risk the death penalty.

Vadym Boychenko, who was mayor before Mariupol was captured, published disturbing photos from his hometown. The Russians would build human cages in the Philharmonie – apparently to conduct show trials in the concert hall. The cages would consist of “20 millimeters thick rebar,” Bojchenko said. He is sure: “The occupiers in Mariupol are planning to execute Ukrainian fighters,” writes the ex-mayor on Telegram.

‘They continue to multiply military atrocities’
Boychenko further criticized that the occupiers “continue to ignore all international standards”. “They continue to multiply military atrocities, showing that they have no respect for the entire civilized world.” Among other things, he appealed to the UN and the Red Cross to ensure fair treatment of prisoners of war.

Prisoners of war from abroad are threatened with shooting
It has only recently become clear that the occupiers are not careful with prisoners of war: a few weeks ago, pro-Russian separatists sentenced to death foreign fighters who had fought on the side of Ukraine. The two Britons and the Moroccan were captured in mid-April by pro-Russian fighters in the southeastern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol – now they are in danger of being shot as mercenaries. Britain, Ukraine and the United Nations strongly criticized the death sentence and spoke of prisoners of war entitled to protection.

A few days ago, the Russian Supreme Court classified the Ukrainian Azov regiment as a “terrorist organization”. This can lead to more severe penalties for captured regimental members.
