Soy and maize on board – Ukraine: Two more grain carriers set sail

Date:

Grain exports from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, which resumed last week after a month-long blockade by Russia, are continuing, according to Turkish sources. The Turkish Defense Ministry announced in Ankara that two more ships loaded with grain left the port on Monday. Meanwhile, the very first grain transporter from Ukraine reached the port of destination in Turkey on Monday.

The Turkish-flagged vessel Polarnet (pictured above) arrived in Kocaeli on the Sea of Marmara on Monday, Turkey’s state-owned Anadolu News Agency reported. According to the Turkish Defense Ministry in Ankara, ten grain ships have left Ukrainian ports so far.

On Monday, two ships left Ukraine: the freighter Sacura left Jusni with 11,000 tons of soybeans on board, the destination was Italy. The Arizona, in turn, transported 48,458 tons of corn from Chernomorsk to southern Turkey. Four ships – including the Polarnet – loaded with more than 160,000 tons of corn and other foodstuffs left Ukraine’s Black Sea ports on Sunday.

Like Russia, Ukraine has been one of the world’s largest grain exporters. However, the war brought supplies to an almost complete standstill as Russian forces blocked Ukrainian ports for months.

After an agreement was reached between the warring parties, brokered by Turkey and the United Nations, the first grain ships were able to go free last week. The deal is one of the few diplomatic breakthroughs since the start of the war in late February.
