According to the UN Population Fund, the serious economic crisis in Sri Lanka threatens the health of pregnant women and girls in the island state. As the United Nations announced in New York on Monday, the once-robust health system is “on the brink of collapse” due to energy shortages and a lack of essential goods, including medicines.
For life-saving health measures, 10.7 million dollars (about 10.5 million euros) is needed within six months. More than two million women are affected.
Years of efforts have steadily improved the situation of women and girls in the once ambitious country. About 99 percent of women now give birth to their children in health facilities with the help of medical personnel. “But that performance is now under threat,” warned the Population Fund. Protection mechanisms for women and girls in need are also being hit by the worst economic crisis in decades.
