German ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel receives the Nansen Prize from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The organization announced this in Geneva on Tuesday. UNHCR recognizes their role in 2015 and 2016 when Germany took in more than 1.2 million refugees and asylum seekers.
“Dr Merkel has shown what can be achieved when politicians act correctly and work to find solutions to the world’s challenges rather than shifting the blame onto others,” the UNHCR said. The prize is endowed with 150,000 dollars (about 152,000 euros).
“We make it”
In the late summer of 2015, when many refugees, mostly Syrians, came to Germany via Hungary and Austria, Merkel decided not to close Germany’s borders. One of her most famous phrases at the time was, “We can do it.” Merkel’s decision was controversial within the European Union but also in German society.
