In the middle of a heat wave – lack of ice cubes makes Spain sweat

Date:

In the midst of the heat wave, the Spaniards have run out of ice cubes. Especially in Mallorca, where it is high season, cold sangria will soon no longer be for sale.

Especially on the tourist island of Mallorca, pubs with an ice maker are popular nowadays. They still have sangria with ice. Other bars and restaurants often have to wait up to 48 hours for the next delivery of frozen water.

The increased demand due to the heat waves and the increase in production, storage and transport prices led to a nationwide increasing ice cube shortage.

Ice Cube King: ‘The worst is yet to come’
Someone who knows the situation very well is the entrepreneur Miguel Ángel Vázquez Gavira, who in Spain is called “Rey del Cubito”, “King of the Ice Cube”, because his company has a share of more than 20 percent in the local market. and also active in other European countries. “And the worst is yet to come. The coming weeks will be dramatic,” the 56-year-old warns.

Supermarket chains are already rationing ice cubes. Many companies only deliver to regular customers. According to industry information, demand rose from four to eight million kilograms per day in the summer. Only two million are produced every day.
