The shops in the Outlet Center Parndorf in Burgenland are contractually obliged to keep their double doors open all year round – so that they also cool and heat the outside air. With gasoline. The sales staff suffer from this in both summer and winter. The dissatisfaction is great.
If you’re just hunting for bargains, you might not notice that all (!) doors in the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet are wide open — at 30 degrees and above. “We are contractually obliged to do so,” says a store manager on behalf of many colleagues. “It’s a joke.”
This questionable practice can be traced back to the center management’s “open door” policy: the customer must be encouraged to enter before the fear of the unknown prevents them from doing so. “In the summer we cool the air outside, in the winter we warm it,” says the lady, who is particularly bothered by the cold season. “I can’t just walk in with a poodle hat and sell designer stuff!”
“It’s a waste of energy”
All air conditioning systems run on gas, a big topic in times like these. “It’s a total waste of energy. The gas price probably won’t matter for the luxury labels. But for franchisees, this is an existential threat.” The systems are centrally controlled “I can’t turn mine off. I can only regulate the temperature.”
Attempts to negotiate with center management failed. “We had even prepared a petition. Pointless.” And what if you just shut the door? “Then security is there five minutes later and says: Open up!”
No one from center management was willing to comment.
