At least 50 percent of the district heating in Vienna is produced in cogeneration plants that generate electricity and heat from natural gas (gas-fired thermal power plants). For peak periods, for example when it gets particularly cold in winter, heating systems are used, which also run on gas. Depending on the weather and temperatures, up to 65 percent of district heating is generated from gas.
About a third of the heat comes from waste incineration, the rest comes from industrial residual heat, for example from OMV or Manner, biomass and large heat pumps. By 2040, Wien Energie wants to do without fossil fuels for the generation of district heating.

The district heating price for the end customer consists of the base price and the energy price. The energy price depends on the amount of heat actually consumed. In addition, 20 percent sales tax is charged.
