A 10-year-old girl was attacked by a Rottweiler in July 2021 and seriously injured. On Tuesday, the dog owner had to answer to the Graz Criminal Court for serious bodily harm. Because there had already been several incidents with the dog, which often roamed freely, the suspect was conditionally sentenced to a fine of 3,600 euros and four months. Not legally binding.
The then 10-year-old was walking with her mother when the dog attacked her, biting her arm, chest and both thighs. According to the medical expert, the injuries were serious, but without lasting consequences. The pet owner was unaware of any guilt: “I fenced the kennel, the fence is six feet high and the dog has never escaped before. What should I have done?
Judge Hanspeter Draxler, however, harbored “not even the slightest doubt” that the accused was guilty. “The dog terrorized the entire area for a long period of time,” he said. “This goes far beyond negligence,” the chairman emphasized. Before July 2021, there were several incidents with injuries, the dog is said to have attacked children several times.
The Rottweiler was taken to the animal shelter, but has since been placed privately again. “He’s super friendly, he’s my little teddy bear,” said his new owner. “The aggressiveness of the animal was known,” said the judge, on the other hand, and declared the suspect guilty. This took three days to think about it, the prosecutor made no statement. The verdict is not final.
