Now the 85-year-old approached the legendary Safari-Grindrace in Kenya. “Grind races are a relatively young discipline in bicycles, in which it is mainly driven on the Grindweg and therefore the bikes have wider tires,” explains Lackner. Africa with its many “natural roads” offers ideal conditions for this.
Fall into a Thornbusch
“More than 1000 active people were at the beginning”, reports not from Kenya. “Deep sand and thorn bushes were a challenge,” said the bicycle Senior, who was a painful acquaintance with the last in the case of a fall on more than 50 km/h. The result: a rib bruising. With the support of two colleagues, Lackner was able to swing in the bicycle saddle again.
Despite injury to the finish
But this injury could not stop the sporty pensioners. He won superior in the 85+ category. But which paint is especially satisfied: “That I also left 40 percent of the younger starters!”
