After the string of murders of Muslims, police in Albuquerque, New Mexico, have arrested a 51-year-old suspect. Police chief Harold Medina said at a news conference on Tuesday evening that he was charged with the murder of two Muslim men. It is also believed to be linked to two other murders.
The researchers did not comment on the motive in detail. There are indications, however, that the alleged perpetrator knew his victims and that there may have been a personal conflict. According to the police, the alleged perpetrator is from Afghanistan and has come to the United States in recent years. He was known to the police for several minor offences.
Tip from the population led to suspects
At this point, it does not amount to a hate crime charge, it said. However, as the investigations have not yet been completed, everything is still open and that cannot be ruled out either. “His crime made our community feel attacked,” Police Chief Medina said. Ultimately, a tip from the public helped to catch the alleged perpetrator.
Albuquerque police said Saturday night they were investigating a murder of a Muslim man possibly linked to three similar acts in the city. In all four cases in the past nine months, the murdered Muslim men were from South Asia.
The federal police FBI is supporting the local police in the investigation. The three most recent murders took place within the space of two weeks and caused a stir in the city. The city had increased police presence after the killings – for example, in front of mosques.
Firearms found in suspect’s car
According to their own statements, the police had already arrived at the suspect’s home on Monday. He then drove off in his car and was eventually arrested in the city of Santa Rosa. Investigators also found several firearms in the suspect’s car. For at least one of the guns, the casings matched those found at two crime scenes, an investigator said.
