Attack on Biden – After Raid: Republicans Strengthen Trump’s Back

Date:

After the FBI searches his Florida property, the air for ex-US President Donald Trump is getting thinner and thinner. But he is already launching a counterattack, accusing Democrats of a “coordinated attack” that also involves President Joe Biden. Meanwhile, plenty of high-ranking party colleagues are behind Trump — but there is criticism in their own ranks as well.

According to media reports, authorities assumed Trump’s team did not return all of the documents the ex-president took from the White House after his term in office. The missing documents should therefore be important for national security.

Privately owned confidential documents
The FBI searched Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago on Monday. The background was apparently Trump’s handling of documents from his tenure. Earlier this year, it was revealed that the National Archives responsible for preserving presidential correspondence suspected several boxes of confidential material, including in Trump’s private club.

Trump eventually handed over several documents to the authority in January. Investigators are said to have visited Trump’s property in the spring to talk to his team about the government documents that were captured, US media reported.

Secret Service Secure Access
After that, there was another exchange between investigators and Trump’s lawyers, it said. Officials eventually suspected that Trump or his team were still holding important documents, the Washington Post wrote, citing anonymous sources. The FBI is said to have taken 12 boxes during the search.

According to the CNN broadcaster, the ex-president’s security personnel, the Secret Service, were notified of the action about an hour before the search. The Secret Service eventually provided access, but did not actively assist in the search for the documents.

Trump was not at his property during the action, but the investigation could have far-reaching consequences for him – if convicted on the charges, he will not be allowed to run for president again.

Trump complains about ‘banana republic’
On Tuesday, he continued to rant about the search on Truth Social, a network he co-founded. “Something terrible happened in Mar-a-Lago yesterday. We are no better than a third world country, a banana republic,” he wrote, also accusing US President Joe Biden of having been informed of the action in advance.

The White House rejected such allegations. “The president was unaware and knew nothing about it. (…) No one in the White House was warned,” said Biden’s spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre. She declined to comment on the investigation.

Republicans: search “honest”
Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie (Republican) called the search “fair play” — it’s also not illegal to open a private safe. He is confident that authorities checked something “so unprecedented” well in advance.

Pence detects bias
At the same time, powerful Republicans supported Trump. In addition to Republican minority leader in the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, influential Republican Mitch McConnell called for an immediate clarification of the events. Former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley made a similar statement.

And even Trump’s former deputy Mike Pence supported Trump. “Yesterday’s action undermines public confidence in our justice system,” he said. The appearance of bias on the part of the Ministry of Justice must be dispelled. Pence recently distanced himself from Trump. He would have ambitions to become president in 2024.

Trump ally’s cell phone seized
The news portal “Axios” reported Tuesday evening (local time) that the FBI had seized the cell phone of Trump ally Rick Perry. This is another sign that the Justice Department’s investigation into the 2021 US Capitol attack is gaining momentum.

Perry was part of the Trump team that was actively working to undo the 2020 election results. In a statement, Perry said three officers confiscated his phone while he was out with his family. A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment.
