TV journalist Marina Ovsiannikova has made many enemies in Moscow with her criticism of the Kremlin. Now her house has been searched by Russian security forces. A lawyer for a human rights organization said the door was simply kicked in without waiting for their legal representatives to arrive.
The human rights organization OVD-Info reported on the attack on the journalist. According to Dmitry Zakhvatov, a lawyer for the organization, Ovsiannikova is now facing a commission of inquiry. Now there are even more consequences: The “spreading of false information about the country’s armed forces” has recently become a criminal offense in Russia. The maximum penalty is 15 years in prison.
“They’re just lying to you here”
In March, Ovsiannikova caused a stir with an anti-war message in a live broadcast on Russia’s state TV channel Kanal One. During Russia’s biggest evening news show, she walked into the photo with a placard behind the presenter. “Don’t believe the propaganda, they’re just lying to you here,” it read. She was initially sentenced to a fine of 30,000 rubles (about 480 euros) and threatened with further consequences.
After the disruptive action, she first fled Russia and worked for a German newspaper before returning to her homeland over a custody dispute. She did not stop criticizing the “military operation”, as the Kremlin calls the invasion war.
Three fines imposed so far
She was briefly arrested in mid-July and has received two more fines in recent weeks for discrediting the country’s military in her social media posts.
