Reporters captured spectacular aerial photos in California on Wednesday. During a wildfire near the town of Gorman, about 100 kilometers northwest of Los Angeles, they filmed a so-called firenado, a fire tornado (see video above).
Such a fire tornado occurs when hot dry winds meet open fire. It consists of a burning core surrounded by rotating air, which allows combustion to continue for a longer period of time. Such dangerous “Firenados” can grow up to 30 meters in height.
The “Firenado” near Gorman was created during a wildfire that raged over an area of about a square kilometer. More than 200 firefighters and a fire fighting helicopter were deployed. However, according to Los Angeles County, no residential areas would be at risk. The wildfires are 60 percent under control.
California has been battling wildfires and wildfires due to high temperatures for several weeks. In the US state, more than 27,000 square kilometers of forest has been destroyed or damaged by fire in the past two years.
