TV journalist Marina Owsiannikova, who became known for her live protest against the Russian military operation in Ukraine, is placed under house arrest. That applies until October 9, a Moscow court announced on Thursday. Owsiannikova, 44, who was arrested on Wednesday, faces up to 10 years in prison for discrediting the military.
Since late July, the mother of two has already been fined twice for “discrediting” the military. The statements mainly related to publications in online networks in which the journalist criticized the military offensive in Ukraine.
With a protest poster on Russian state television
Ovsiannikova gained international fame when she appeared behind the news anchor in mid-March on a live broadcast from her employer, a broadcaster loyal to the Kremlin, holding a protest poster targeting the military operation in Ukraine into the camera. The Russian authorities, which have been cracking down on government critics for years, have considerably tightened their criminal procedures since the start of the military offensive.
