A 28-year-old woman in Vienna is under investigation for attempted murder. As reported, the young mother had violently shaken her four-month-old daughter, seriously injuring the girl. The suspect has since been taken into custody.
According to a preliminary assessment by a coroner – his written report is not yet available – the woman allegedly inflicted a vibratory trauma on the small child on July 29. The prosecution assumes conditional intent to murder. According to the current state of the investigation, the mother is accused of at least seriously thinking it possible and accepting that shaking the baby could result in death.
decision valid
As the Vienna Regional Criminal Court informed the APA on Friday, the 28-year-old woman was taken into custody. The decision is legally valid, the mother agreed. Her lawyer has not appealed, says court spokeswoman Christina Salzborn.
Mother: “Shaked out of despair”.
The baby was no longer in imminent danger. After her arrest, the mother admitted to shaking the toddler once “out of desperation” because he was constantly crying. Before the detention and legal protection judge, she referred to the information she had given to the police.
The parents had alerted the rescue service, in the hospital the doctors found life-threatening internal injuries and called the police. The Vienna State Police then started the investigation. The baby is currently in intensive care.
