Some movie cars have become more or at least as famous as the stars in the lead roles. That certainly applies to the DeLorean DMC-12 from the “Back to the Future” trilogy, but also to the Batmobile in all its versions. The most expensive have a value that far exceeds Hollywood costs.
The most expensive movie car ever sold at auction is the Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder from the Oscar-winning classic “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” starring Sophia Loren. It grossed a whopping $17.1 million. It is, however, a celebrity in its own right, apart from its cinematic look: it is also one of only 37 examples of this type ever built.

There are three other classic Ferraris in the top 10 most expensive movie cars up for auction, but the frontrunner is by far the most expensive. The asking price is more than double the $7.25 million for the 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe from the movie Red Line 7000.
At #5 is the 1966 Batmobile, which grossed $4.62 million in 2013. It was built in 15 days from the hand-built Lincoln Futura concept car with a budget of $15,000.
The most legendary car in movie history
But the most legendary car in movie history is something else: the DeLorean DMC-12. It is considered a cult vehicle, whose status was cemented most notably by its film appearance as a time travel machine in the mid-1980s. With over 1 million reviews on IMDb (Internet Movie Datadase), the sports coupe is the most popular car among viewers.
The Mad Max “Fury Road” combat car takes second place, ahead of the Ford Gran Torino Sport from the 2008 film Gran Torino, directed by and starring Clint Eastwood.

This is how the rankings came about
The analysis of the online car marketplace Carwow takes into account vehicles that appeared more than 97,000 times, according to the Movie Cars Database. Cars from 27 countries that have appeared in movies since 1920 were taken into account.
To find the most common car makes and models in movie history, the analysis was limited to movie appearances with three or more stars on IMCDb (i.e. the car was given a major role and was used by at least one lead actor or was in a chase scene). ).
The most iconic cars in movies were ranked based on their starring role in a movie (a 5-star role by IMDb) and most popular movies on IMDb.com).
