Dramatic action on Friday afternoon in Pucking (Upper Austria), where every second counted. A couple was cleaning a biogas silo when they both collapsed unconscious. The two probably inhaled residual gases. The two victims are in critical condition in intensive care.
“A few gasps is enough and you collapse. Our operation was only possible with heavy respiratory protection,” said Andreas Pointner, head of operations at the Pucking-Hasenufer fire brigade. The son had noticed the tragedy and immediately alerted the emergency services.
Recovered from a depth of seven meters
Rescuers ventilated the silo and were able to rescue the couple from a depth of seven meters. Both were removed from the silo after 45 minutes and could be handed over to the rescue brigade. The operation was particularly difficult because the biogas plant was only accessible to the helpers through a very small opening. “The most important thing was that we got both people out of the silo alive,” the operations manager said with relief.
Both in intensive care
However, when they were taken away, the man and his wife were still unresponsive and unconscious. The man was transported by rescue helicopter “Christopherus 10” to the hospital in Wels, his wife was taken by ambulance to the Elisabethinen in Linz. Both were in critical condition in intensive care on Friday afternoon after a “Krone” request.
