Integration report – More refugees than Tyroleans receive social assistance

Date:

In Austria, every fourth person has a migration background – according to the current integration report 2022, presented by Minister Susanne Raab a few weeks ago. A look at Tyrol shows that more refugees than residents receive social assistance.

In 2021 there were a total of 14,500 welfare recipients in Tyrol. Of these, 5,600 people were Austrian (39 percent), while 6,000 asylum seekers were entitled to asylum or subsidiary protection (41 percent). This means that more refugees received social assistance than the local population. A further 1,600 were other third country nationals, including stateless persons and unknown persons (11 percent) and a further 1,300 were EU, EFTA, UK and Associated Small States nationals (9 percent).

High percentage of refugees in Vorarlberg too
A similar picture emerges in Vorarlberg: 3,900 local benefit claimants (39 percent) were confronted in 2021 with 3,800 refugees and persons entitled to subsidiary protection (39 percent), ie the same number. In the other Länder, the number of domestic welfare recipients exceeds that of those entitled to asylum and subsidiary protection.

90,500 people received national assistance
Across Austria, the situation is as follows (excluding Vienna): 90,500 people received social assistance in the previous year – 44,000 of them Austrian citizens (49 percent), 31,100 persons entitled to asylum and subsidiary protection (34 percent), 8,300 others third country nationals (9 percent) and 7,100 EU citizens, EFTA, UK and associated small countries (8 percent).

Overall, the number of recipients was highest among Syrian citizens in all states, followed by Afghans – with the exception of Vorarlberg, where Russian Federation nationals (almost exclusively from Chechnya) came in second, and Burgenland, where they were Hungarians. .

Counting differs in the federal states
Based on the annual sum of recipients measured in relation to the total population of the respective federal state, in 2021, as in 2020, Vienna (8.8 percent) was the most frequent recipient, followed by Vorarlberg (2.5 percent) and Tyrol ( 1.9 percent). However, the federal state comparison is only possible to a limited extent, because in some cases the counting method and the size of the services differ between the federal states.
