Ukraine attacks Crimea again, destroys Russian ammunition depot

Date:

Kiev troops’ third bombardment of the Moscow-annexed area has left at least two wounded and started a major fire in a powder keg.

Crimea, a peninsula that is the base of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and which Moscow annexed in 2014, seemed out of reach for Ukrainian missiles. However, it has already been attacked three times this month. The last one this morning. According to several Telegram channels and Russian and Ukrainian media, the target of the shots was a Russian army ammunition arsenal in the town of Maískoye, located 20 kilometers from Dzhankoe, in the northern part of Crimea.

According to images posted by eyewitnesses on social media, the attack set off a chain reaction and the explosions are still continuing this morning. In addition, in another incident and according to the Russian agency RIA-Nóvosti, a transformer in Dzhankoe caught fire immediately after the missiles hit the arsenal in Maiskoye, from which the population is being evacuated. No casualties have been reported yet, although at least two have been injured.

The pro-Russian leader of Crimea, Sergei Aksionov, is already on site to inspect the eradication of the massive fire and lead the evacuation of civilians. One of the Crimean Tatars’ leaders, Rafat Chubarov, claims that what happened was a “precise attack on a Russian military unit in the city of Qalay”, a small town renamed Azóvskoye by the Russians and, according to Chubarov, a kilometers from Maiskoye.

On August 9, a series of explosions took place at the Saki airport, attached to the Black Sea Fleet and located next to the village of Novofyodorovka. Ukrainian forces have not confirmed or denied authorship of the bombings, while the Russian Defense Ministry has assured that an accident caused the blasts and left a single person dead and 14 injured. But the air base and many of its buildings were almost completely destroyed. At least 17 fighters, one transport plane and six helicopters were scrapped.

The first attack on targets in Crimea took place on July 31, when Russia celebrated the day of its Navy in St. Petersburg in the presence of President Vladimir Putin. A drone managed to hit the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet without being shot down. According to Russian authorities, six soldiers were injured. Kiev, however, claimed to have nothing to do with the attack.

People close to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky suggest that the country’s armed forces will soon be able to launch massive attacks on Russian naval vessels in Crimea and on the bridge connecting the peninsula via the Kerch Strait with Russia’s mainland connects. According to images circulated on social networks showing huge traffic jams on the Kerch Bridge, Russian vacationers are rushing to leave Crimea due to the possibility that the bombings will become more frequent.
