Republican Liz Cheney, known as a harsh critic of former US President Donald Trump, lost to her challenger in her party’s primary in the US state of Wyoming. The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney lost the election to Trump-backed Harriet Hageman on Tuesday, US media reported unanimously.
According to calculations by the American news agency AP, Cheney will no longer be a member of the House of Representatives from January. According to data provider Edison Research, Hageman was ahead of Cheney with more than 33 percent after the first counting of the votes. Cheney admitted his defeat on Wednesday night. But she made it clear that she would continue to fight Trump.
Wants to continue to prevent Trump’s return
The 56-year-old representative of the traditionally conservative Republican wing promised she would do “everything” to prevent Trump from returning to the White House. Since the Capitol Storm on Jan. 6, 2021, she has said that Trump should never be “closed to the Oval Office” ever again. The right-wing populist, who was voted out in 2020, has repeatedly raised a possible renewed presidential candidacy in 2024. Cheney’s defeat was expected.
After the vote, Cheney said the US was at a point “where our democracy is really being attacked and threatened. And I believe that those of us, Republicans, Democrats and Independents, who deeply believe in freedom and who care about the Constitution and the future of the country, have a duty to put that before the party.”
Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social, which he co-founded, “Liz Cheney is a fool who plays right into the hands of those who want to destroy our country!” The winning candidate also criticized Cheney’s speech after her defeat. Their statements would show that they care little about issues related to their state, Hageman said on Fox News. “She remains focused on her obsession with President Trump.”
Voted to impeach Trump
Cheney is the vice chair of the U.S. parliamentary committee investigating the storming of the Capitol. Only one other member of the Republican Party sits next to her on the panel. Cheney was one of only 10 Republicans to vote to impeach Trump after the Capitol storm. The ex-president therefore repeatedly attacked Cheney. In large parts of the Republican Party, the delegate is almost banned.
The United States has been holding primaries for months ahead of the midterm congressional elections in November. For Republicans, the primaries are also an indicator of Trump’s influence over conservatives.
Loses her seat in the House of Representatives
Cheney, who was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2016, will now lose her seat. In her place, Harriet Hageman will run for a seat in her constituency in arch-conservative Wyoming. During the primaries, the 59-year-old took up Trump’s false claims that he only lost the 2020 presidential election to Democrat Joe Biden over alleged mass vote fraud.
