With an inflation rate of 9.3 percent, July was the highest inflation rate since February 1975. Fuel prices are still the strongest driver of inflation. In particular, the increase in the micro-basket (typical daily purchases) was strong – even by 10.3 percent.
Fuel prices have been stagnant for some time at a high level. But there were noticeable price increases for household energy and in the hospitality industry, Statistics Austria announced on Thursday.
Weekly groceries have also become significantly more expensive: the price increase of the mini-shopping basket – the typical household purchase within a week – amounted to 19.1 percent in July, more than twice as high as general inflation. If you exclude expenditure on fuel, energy, food and catering, you arrive at an inflation rate of 3.7 percent.
