British Airways plans to cancel about 10,000 short-haul flights to and from London Heathrow between October and March. At the end of October, a few dozen return flights per day – a total of 629 – will be cancelled, the company announced on request on Monday.
Some long-haul flights are also cancelled. This should result in fewer cancellations and delays in the winter. However, the airline wants to maintain its connections with popular holiday destinations during the autumn school holidays. Most cancellations need to be announced well in advance and travelers usually need to be able to transfer to other connections. The majority of connections and passengers will not be affected by the changes, it said.
Heathrow, the UK’s largest airport, introduced a cap of 100,000 passengers per day in July due to a dire staff shortage. This was supposed to expire in mid-September, but has recently been extended to the end of October. British Airways had already canceled nearly 30,000 flights in the summer.
