After the serious accident at the main distillation plant of the Schwechat refinery, the months of repair work are now behind us. According to OMV, the system is running at full speed again.
The refinery, where the main distillation unit was damaged during maintenance work in early June, ran for months at just one-fifth of its capacity. Already in mid-September, the OMV boss announced that it would be staged again in the first half of October.
To ensure the fuel supply, the state had to intervene several times and free up fuel reserves. Austria currently has reserves for 65 days, but according to the Petroleum Stockpiling Act this should be 90 days. Larger quantities were purchased from abroad.
Security authorities investigate suspected sabotage
While OMV is officially pushing for an accident to this day, state and homeland security authorities are currently investigating a possible behind-the-scenes sabotage in lively exchanges with European partners.
