Cepsa and airline Etihad join forces to accelerate aircraft decarbonisation

Date:

They will promote the production of sustainable fuels for air transport (SAF) and other energy alternatives such as green hydrogen

Cepsa and Etihad have signed an agreement to accelerate the decarbonisation of air transport through research and production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). Both companies prioritize the development of these sustainable fuels as a tool to continue to reduce the carbon footprint of air transport and contribute to the sustainable development goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the fight against climate change. a statement.

These fuels will be produced from circular raw materials such as used cooking oil or biodegradable waste from various industries, and will reduce aviation emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional kerosene.

The alliance also aims to develop new energy alternatives, such as renewable hydrogen, and the electrification of the United Arab Emirates’ national airline’s land fleets, including supply vehicles, baggage loading and unloading and aircraft assistance. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Maarten Wetselaar, CEO of Cepsa, assured that decarbonising air transport “is one of the key challenges of our time and Cepsa is committed to playing a fundamental role in meeting this challenge together with key partners such as Etihad.” .

Adam Boukadida, CFO of Etihad Aviation Group, pointed out that “this is the biggest challenge for our industry and that the development of a commercially viable sustainable aviation fuel is an essential requirement to achieve the sustainability target of the aviation sector.

This agreement is in line with the European Commission’s Fit for 55 package of measures, which includes a legislative initiative called ‘RefuelEU Aviation’ that aims to increase the supply and demand of aviation biofuels in the European Union to 2% of usage in 2025, 5% in 2030 and 63% in 2050.

For its part, Cepsa aims to be the leading producer of biofuels in Spain and Portugal by 2030, producing 2.5 million tons per year, with a particular interest in promoting the sustainability of air traffic, producing 800,000 tons of SAF per year. By 2050, Cepsa aims to go beyond net zero and have a positive impact, adding value to the communities in which it operates, moving its customers and other stakeholders in the right direction.
