Forbes Spain has announced a new edition of its list of ‘The 100 Richest Spaniards’ in which Amancio Ortega, Sandra Ortega, Rafael del Pino y Calvo-Sotelo, Juan Roig and Juan Carlos Escotet reiterate as the country’s five great fortunes, the adding a total of 69,300 million euros in assets, 48.6% of the total ranking.

A novelty in the ‘top 5’, Abanca’s president and maximum shareholder, Juan Carlos Escotet, is the only one of the top five to see his wealth increase by 18% thanks to the 6.6% improvement in annual volume. annualized activity in the first half of the year and after increasing lending to SMEs and the self-employed by 35% above pre-Covid levels to 1,500 million.

The majority shareholder of Inditex retains the leadership, but achieves worse results than last year (-20.1%) and adds a capital of 53,500 million euros, which corresponds to the sum of the 27 Spaniards who follow on the list (53 .8 billion euros). Behind him is his daughter Sandra Ortega – the only woman in the top five of the list – whose fortune has fallen by 14% compared to last year to 5,400 million euros.

These declines are in line with this year’s trend, as the sum of Spain’s major fortunes experiences a decline in wealth to EUR 143,000 million, 7% less than in 2021, averaging EUR 286,301 per day. This decline is partly caused by the conflict in Ukraine, the impending recession and its effect on raw materials and energy, in addition to the interventions of the European Central Bank through interest rate hikes.

Within the top 10, the emergence of the president of the Iberostar group, Miguel Fluxá Rosselló, who has seen his fortune double to 2,700 million euros, stands out and rises by fourteen positions -from 22nd to eighth- thanks to the evolution of the TROS.

All in all, the strongest increase of the year was due to Carmen and Luis Riu Güell, owners and key executives of Riu Hotels & Resorts, who rose from position 91 to 45, after doubling their assets to that of 300 million euros. to 650 million.

For its part, the most amazing entry on the list is starring Fernando Romero, CEO of EiDF, who has been placed directly at position 34 due to the revaluation of his renewable energy company in the stock market.

Romero is joined by another 18 start-ups and in total they add an average net worth of 400 million euros, with a combined heritage of 7,550 million. In addition to the person in charge of EiDF, the novelties include Amancio Ortega’s sister-in-law, Primitiva Renedo, along with Dolores and Josefa Ortega, shareholders of Inditex, or the Josep brothers, Óscar and Meritxell Vall, owners of the Vall Companys meat group.

In addition to large entrepreneurs and shareholders, the Forbes ranking also includes the world of painting or music. For example, in twentieth place is the owner of the painting collection that bears her name, Carmen Thyssen, who has 1,300 million euros in assets, and at number 40 appears Julio Iglesias, who brings together a fortune of 700 million euros. , 6.6% less than last year.
